Vitiligo is a chronic condition in which skin anywhere on the body loses its pigment cells (melanocytes), resulting in white patches. These patches are more susceptible to sunburn. Vitiligo may be localised or widespread, and hair and mucous membranes may also be affected.

Skin infections are common, can occur anywhere on the body, and may be caused by a variety of organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi/yeast and parasites such as mites.

There are three major forms of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Genetics and UV exposure are the two major factors underlying the development of skin cancer. Skin cancer tends to arise in sun exposed areas but may found anywhere on the body including on the palms and soles, under the nails and in the genital area.

Psoriasis is a chronic condition, likely related to immune dysfunction within the skin, that causes the skin to make new cells in days rather than weeks.

Moles, also known as naevi, are a very common type of skin growth often arising during childhood and adolescence. Moles may be flat or raised, and are typically pigmented, but can appear flesh coloured as well.

Lumps and bumps are the first signs of skin abnormalities that can occur on the surface of the skin or within deeper skin layers. These are primarily benign lesions that can occur anywhere on the body or face, and may be removed for medical or cosmetic reasons.

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces an excess of pigment, also known as melanin, and appears as darker brown, tan, grey, red, or purplish spots or patches. Many factors may contribute to the development of hyperpigmentation including genetics, ageing, UV exposure, hormonal changes and certain medications.

Hyperhidrosis is condition characterised by excessive sweating, not necessarily related to heat, emotions or activity. Hyperhidrosis most commonly affects the underarms, palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and the head- but can effect anywhere on the body.

Urticaria is a skin reaction marked by itchy, red wheals. Individual hives typically last less than 24 hours, and new ones may appear as older ones fade. They can appear anywhere on the face and body.

Hair loss (alopecia) may affect just the scalp, just the body, or both, depending on the underlying cause, and it may be temporary or permanent. Hair loss may be the result of genetics, a medical condition, hormonal changes, medications or a part of the normal ageing process. Baldness refers to excessive hair loss from the scalp, hereditary hair loss is the most common cause of baldness.

Dermatitis is a general term for skin irritation and usually involves an itchy, dry and reddened rash, which can appear anywhere on the face or body. It is not contagious, but can be quite uncomfortable and may make sufferers feel very self-conscious.

Acne is a very common condition caused by congestion and inflammation of the oil-producing glands in the skin predominantly on the face, chest and back. It can appear anywhere on the body, though. Acne may be characterised by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), and/or inflamed papules, pustules and nodules.
